String
Several modules connected in series. A string is created when the installer connects several modules in series. The voltages of the modules then add up while the current remains the same. If one module is shaded or defective, the whole string will have a lower yield. Modern inverters can counteract this with special MPP tracking techniques or by using optimisers.
In photovoltaics, the term 'string' refers to a group of solar cells connected together to generate a higher voltage. Strings can consist of several dozen to several hundred cells and are usually connected in parallel to increase the current.
A typical PV system consists of several strings connected together to produce the desired current and voltage. An optimal string configuration can help maximise the efficiency of the system and increase electricity production.
