Smart Metering

Smart metering is the intelligent, digital measurement of energy values, such as electricity consumption. The associated hardware is called a smart meter, which measures how much energy is consumed, fed into the grid or produced.

In PV systems, smart meters from different manufacturers typically monitor the grid connection point. This allows the PV inverter to dynamically regulate the feed-in limit of 70% of the system's capacity, as it can take into account household consumption. In addition, energy storage systems can use these smart meters to measure how much surplus power is available to charge the battery. A smart meter can also measure and monitor the output of a third-party product, such as an inverter or a combined heat and power (CHP) unit.

For the energy supply company, smart meters enable remote reading of recorded meter readings through built-in additional functions or retrofitted modules. Smart meters are available for gas, water, electricity and (district) heating.
